(GM will partner with eBay in California to allow consumers to bid on vehicles just as they would in a typical eBay auction. They could also choose a "Buy it Now" option in an experiment to make car shopping easier. Dealers would still distribute the cars.

"As a culture, General Motors needs to be prepared to experiment and adjust," he said.)

Top 10 Green car from kbb.com

To mark the coming of Earth Day 2009 kbb.com has posted their top 10 green car for 2009 for the US market. The Prius once again make the final list with some expected chooses like Insight, Fit, and Jetta TDI. The new 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid also make the list with Escape Hybrid, Ford taken 2 spot from just 3 naming from an American manufacture. Japan auto company took 4 spots, Germany auto company took 3 spots (Mini Cooper is now a BMW own company). Japan and Europe has always been at the top of green auto development, but I don't think American is really behind too far with new auto company like Teslamotors.

2010 Toyota Prius pricing announced.

Toyota US has just announced the pricing for the 2010 all new Prius. Pricing starting from 21,000USDwith 5 different trims to choose from. A filly loaded version cost around 33,000USD. autobloggreen.com has an early test drive review. With more room for 5 adults, more power and a 50-mpg combined number it is amazing that the Toyota engineer can add some much and take so little. The Honda Insight is still cheaper but it looks like Toyota is hoping that choose will be the important reason to open the Prius concept to more people. With a possibility of gas price to increase to above 2USD per gallon this summer both the Insight and Prius might see a jump in sales very soon.

Open Source Software for Mac.

A friend ask me about alternative software for photo editing software like Photoshop, but there really isn't any software that can rival PS function and power. But if you don't need all those professional grade functions with pro-cost. There is a few good open source alternative like that base on GIMP code running on X11 environment or native OSX like Seashore. Here is a good website to go when it comes to Mac Open Source projects http://www.opensourcemac.org/

Possible Time Capsule & Airport Extreme update?

According to Appleinsider that Apple might be ready to update it's Airport wireless product with dual spectrum to solve one of the problem of supporting different wireless product within the same network. Today a home wireless network might be supporting difference device like computer, iPhone, media server, game console IP Cam and they all use different wireless spectrum ranging from the slow 802.11b to ultra fast 802.11n. The problem with supporting multi-spectrum in one network chip is the system have to switch constantly between different radio signal therefor slowing down the overall performance of the network. With dual spectrum the low band signal like 11b/g will stay within their own channel and the 11n can operate with better efficiency.

New iMac and Mac Mini coming?

The internet is buzzing with the rumor that Apple will be introducing the long awaited update to the iMac and Mac Mini within the month of March. Those updates a likely to be speed bump and better value package like lager hard drive, more stander memory and faster GPU. I think is unlikely for Apple to introduce an all new design in todays economy with desktop sales slow to a stand still. I think most consumer will be looking a good deal, for Apple to stay competitive with the other PC vendor, introduce an all new design will not be as competitive as squeezing more life out of the current design, which still look very good compare to other new PC design.

Cans the US auto design complete?

As the Geneva Auto Show about to start it reminded me that a lot of the european auto brand does belong to the same group in the US but it doesn't mean that they sell the same car model or share the same design language. In my opinion the european usually does a much better job in styling and packaging the same platform technology compare to the US. Take a look at the above example of the Euro version (Ampera) of the GM Chevy Volt, which will be sold in Europe under Opel and compare it with the US version below. The "Ampera" is just much more better looking and look much more like an advance automobile. Under those skin they are identical in technology design.
Look at this Ford example. The American Ford has been making small car for years using the underlaying design platform from Mazda (Part of Ford Group). Both US and Euro version share the same model name but look completely different. and I will rather spend my dollars on the Euro version on the right over the US version on the left.
The US auto company like Ford are starting to taking a hard look at those Euro model not just styling but also their efficiency technology which the European are much better with due to high gas price and cost of ownership. Below is the US version of the successful Ford Europe "Fiesta".
Rumor on the internet also suggested that American Ford might be building this lovable crossover name "Kuga" in the US also which are based on the European Ford Focus.

Safari 4 Beta

New and improve with 150 new feature on the new Safari 4 web browser. If you are venture enough to use beta software you can try this new public beta and get lighting fast page load especially on Javascript base website. It also looks like the new Safari also borrow some of the concept from Google open source browser Chome which are also based on the open source WebKit project. Both Top Site and History Search feature is very nicely done in MacOSX style. Safari 4 also support the new HTML 5 stander with aloud web application to be stored offline. Which Google has demoed at Mobile World Congress this month with the new google mail running offline on the iPhone. As I have said on my last post that we can expect Apple to focus heavily on software to keep consumer looking at the Apple conner.

2009 the year of software for Mac.

As the years move on to Feb. no new major Mac hardware has been announced in Macworld or the Mac 25th anniversary. I think with the slow economy and low consumer spending Apple might be focusing on their software offering to help keep the company in a heathy and positive growth. A matter of fact it is Apple software effort that really make a different between a Window PC and the Mac PC. Also, a great software will not just keep Mac user happy it will also can make a PC user switch. So if you happen to leave in a city that has an Apple retail store, look for some important changes this year that the Apple retail store will focus more on software and that will also hold true to iPhone. If you're looking for an all new redesign iMac in 2009 I don't think it will happen, but I'm sure Apple will upgrade the Mac line to stay competitive. I think the biggest improvement in the Mac will surely be in OSX 10.6.x.

Face Off!

The year beginning with a very interesting face off in the auto industry. Finally, Honda are back in the fight in the hybrid auto with the NEW Insight. From looks the Insight and the Prius looks similar, but Toyota has refocused the New Prius to be a bit more upscale. Toyota also has introduced a new Lexus HS 250h base on the same 3rd Gen Prius underlaying technology with a Lexus class fit and finish. Honda went to the complete opposite and believing that the general market will love the idea of a hybrid budget sedan. Who will win, I guess that will be the consumer, cause we will have a much more wide range of feed good and do good vehicle to choose from.

Best wish to Steve Jobs and his family.

Steve Jobs announced that he will be taking a leave of absence from Apple due to his health issue and plant to return his CEO duty by June 2009. I wish him and his family all the best in this difficult time and I'm looking forward for his return to Apple.

In the past years since his return to Apple in 1997 has really put the company back in a very strong position. He also hand picked the best team in the IT industry and resurrected the spirit of Apple.

iMac Introduction at Macworld 1998.

Tuesday, January 06, 2009

The MacWorld 09 keynote has just finished. Apple has introduced iLife 09, iWork 09, iWork.com, New 17" MacBook Pro and iTunes Music Store with DRM-free music, new pricing and song download though 3G network. Form the list above it looks thin, but there are some really major upgrade on the software side with face recognition tagging, location base search (GPS) for iPhoto 09. There is also a new way to export slideshow to iPhone/iPod touch. Major feature upgrade for iMovie with better editing control and many more. iWorks got some heavy improvement... The disappointing side is that there is only "1" new Mac hardware introduction, the 17" MacBook Pro with Unibody design with small overall size and weight. A much improve battery life is a welcome improvement but a non removable design will be a interesting tradeoff. I think Apple is saving the iMac and other product introduction at a later stage during the 25th Mac Anniversary (22nd Jan 1984).
